Today we will talk about our membership vows to refresh us and renew them while we welcome new members into our congregation. In our United Methodist liturgy we can see in the vows what it means to be a member of the Church. There is a list in the Hymnal: we commit ourselves to participate faithfully in its ministries by our prayers, presence, gifts, service and witness. Today I want to invite you to think about what it means being a member and we will talk more about the five next Sunday.
Most of us enjoy membership in many clubs and organizations like a credit card, country club… we pay for services and benefits of “membership”. But as you all know, the church is a different kind of membership. Becoming a member of the Church is not like purchasing the services offered by the church. Rather it is offering ourselves to the service of Christ through the ministries of the church.
