On the Last Sunday after Epiphany and before we begin our 40day journey of Lent, this morning we hear the story of the transfiguration from the book of Mark. Reading two texts, in the Old Testament, Elijah ascends to heaven in a spectacular whirlwind and in the Gospel, Jesus reveals his divinity on a light filled mountaintop. In both stories, there are miraculous and light filled moments of God’s glory. Also in both stories the followers, the student of Elijah and the disciples of Jesus, have to deal with loss, some struggle.
So, we read today’s readings not only to reflect on God’s glory but also as witnesses to some struggles.
